An autumn letter

A letter to the reader

Dear Reader,

Every field of inquiry emerges and develops within history, shaped by the relational structures of its particular time and place.

Today, we face questions of subjectivity, the coexistence of heterogeneous values, governance near criticality in international relations, justice, and our ethical relations with heterogeneous subjects and the environment.

Education, the creation and development of knowledge, and judgment in an age of AI also call for our attention, as does climate change.

An isolated disciplinary perspective can offer only a partial response to such interconnected challenges.

We need to understand the relations among disciplines, work within the relational systems they form together, and create where new possibilities are needed.

This is why I do not make my intellectual home within any single discipline.

The challenges of our time ask us to approach judgment, creation, and development in scholarship with a view of the whole, informed by systems theory.

If you find something worthwhile here, even a small spark of understanding, I will be very glad.

As autumn arrives, I wish you well in your studies and in your efforts to address global challenges, and hope that both bear fruit.

May we witness the meaning of life as our curiosity and sense of purpose unfold within history.
